The ocean is at a tipping point, but together, we can turn the tide. This isn’t just about restoration; it’s a movement to revive our oceans and protect our planet’s future. Your partnership with Sea Base will create a living legacy, ensuring the survival of Florida’s Coral Reef, a vital ecosystem that is North America’s only living coral barrier reef.
The world’s reefs are disappearing at an unprecedented rate, with projections showing that 60% could be lost by 2030. Florida’s Coral Reef, the world’s third largest, is a vital ecosystem home to over 6,000 species of marine life. Without focused intervention and the support of dedicated partners, this critical ecosystem is at risk.
The Sea Base Coral Restoration Program began in 2019 at the Brinton Environmental Center (BEC) with a broodstock of just 200 corals. At the BEC, Scouts and Sea Base staff now grow and plant more than 15,000 corals annually, and our goal is to expand the program even further. With the support of partners, we plan to increase the BEC’s nursery capacity to grow 20,000 corals per year. At Sea Base Islamorada, a new coral nursery and laboratory will allow us to grow an additional 20,000 corals per year. This plan will effectively double the number of corals grown and planted by Sea Base staff and Scouts annually, exponentially accelerating our impact on reef restoration.
As part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mission: Iconic Reefs initiative, Sea Base’s pioneering program has been recognized for its effectiveness. Our success was featured in the 2025 Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Magazine, highlighting how most of our transplanted corals survived the heating events of the summer of 2024. By leading the way in conservation and partnering with the oceanic protection community, the Sea Base coral restoration program is expanding the impact of Scouting America, becoming a model for global reef restoration. This is the power of partnership in action.
Your generosity fuels Sea Base’s ability to be a leader in the vital movement to revive our oceans and empowers the next generation of environmental leaders and citizen scientists. This is an opportunity to make a transformative impact, expanding our capacity to restore Florida’s Coral Reef and create a living legacy of environmental stewardship and conservation.
Your partnership is essential to ensuring our long-term vision of taking coral off the endangered species list and restoring this critical ecosystem. Your generous support can be allocated in various ways to help us achieve our goals:
Your support can fund the construction of a new coral nursery and a state-of-the-art coral laboratory, STEM classroom, and galley that allow us to double our annual capacity to grow and plant corals.
By supporting the maintenance endowment, you can ensure the long-term sustainability of our facilities and programs, guaranteeing that our vital work can continue for years to come.
Your partnership can fund new support facilities, including staff and participant housing, the purchase of additional dive boats, and new scuba equipment for the Scouts who participate in the Scuba Advanced Marine
Exploration Adventure.
Your partnership will allow us to expand the coral nursery and laboratory, the galley, and the ship store. We can also repurpose the director’s house and build new year-round staff housing.
